Where to go for a fantastic ski holiday in the Austrian Alps

Follow us with this guide on where to travel for a ski holiday in the Austrian Alps for a romantic discovery of Europe’s heights.

The Austrian Alps are both nurturing and hostile: velvety snow softens the valley bottoms, where streams flow inexorably towards sluggish rivers, while harsh, jagged peaks protrude into the sky, their precipitous slopes unsuitable for the faint of heart. These emerald hills, bejewelled with edelweiss in the summer, are reminiscent of The Sound of Music; in the winter, they are a challenging playground for thrill seekers and Alpine explorers.

SKI HOLIDAY IN THE AUSTRIAN ALPS: WHERE TO GO?

Discover the lovely towns of Lech and St Anton, their ski regions, and some of the luxury vacation homes that we offer in each with our guide to where to go in the Austrian Alps. Follow us down the slopes of two of our favorite luxury vacation spots.

LECH: THE MOST CHARMING SKI RESORT IN AUSTRIA

Lech-Zürs is set in the huge Arlberg ski area, which contains up to 548km of skiable terrain, making it arguably Austria’s largest ski area. Lech is a charming community with the well-known impression of a classic Alpine paradise; wooden chalets bulging with fresh snow on their roofs are clustered in the valley, with an onion-dome church steeple reigning over the quiet hum of daily life. Zürs is a purpose-built resort town farther up the valley, featuring hotels and residential complexes.

    Lech by night

The town itself is understatedly opulent, with restaurants, cafés, and luxury boutiques dotting the streets. The variety of cuisine available will keep gastronomy enthusiasts busy for a long time. Chef Max Natmessnig’s flare is on full show at Rote Wand Chef’s Table, making it one of Lech’s greatest dining experiences. While Lech’s nightlife can not quite compete with that of its neighbour, St Anton, there are several fashionable venues to savour tasty drinks. Head to Fux Bar for a pre-dinner cocktail, where the comprehensive wine list will entice even the most seasoned oenologist.

Lech’s vast ski area is shared with Warth-Schröcken and St Anton. The region is known for its remarkable snowfall and is located at altitudes ranging from 1450m to 2450m. Lech is suited for intermediate and experienced skiers, although beginners may still have a good time. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of mountain eateries that are worth visiting. There are several hiking and bike paths throughout the summer.

Chalech 4: A Lovely Alpine Retreat

Chalech 4 is a contemporary chalet is a cosy and stylish home away from home where you may relax aching limbs after a day of mountain climbing. Put your feet up next to the crackling fire while breakfast is being made – a real buffet to see you through the day. Sink into the deep bath at the conclusion of a hard day as heavy snowflakes drift lazily past the window. Everything you need is within walking distance, including the slopes.

ON THE FORMIDABLE MOUNTAIN RANGE OF ST. ANTON

St Anton-am-Alberg in western Austria is the larger, more lively brother of Lech-am-Alberg, where aprés-ski pulsates late into the night; this is a ski resort for the young and young-at-heart. The community is lovely and energetic, with outstanding examples of Alpine architecture throughout the valley. The valley bottom looks to be a glittering stream winding its way beneath the gaze of the majestic peaks in the nights.

The “cradle of alpine skiing,” as it is known, is dominated by high-octane skiing. However, because St Anton has lately joined the combined ski area with Lech-Zürs, there is still a plethora of softer, more loping, and looping lines that wind down tree-lined paths. The St Anton ski area has 127km of pistes while the broader Alberg ski region has 340km. Another 200km of skiable terrain is accessible using the same ski pass. It is regarded as one of the best ski resorts in the world for advanced skiers. The snow-capped mountain is strewn with eateries that appeal to all tastes, whether you want to dine in grandeur or get a fast warming lunch.

St Anton town is more relaxed than Lech, but it hasn’t lost its opulence, having high-end restaurants as well as less pompous dishes. However, it is the nightlife that shines out. Begin the evening by dancing on the tables of Krazy Kanguruh or Moosewirt.

Villa Villekulla: Close to the Cable Car and Endless Skiing

It will, however, be difficult to tear oneself away from the plushness of this chalet. The home has outdoor pools as well as a sauna, which are great remedies for a tired body.
