    Luxury ski holidays in Megève

Megève, founded in the 1920s by the Rothschilds as a French alternative to St. Moritz, was a popular vacation for the French nobility and is still one of the world’s most luxurious ski resorts today.

Luxury chalets in Megève abound, exuding an air of elegance and sophistication that draws the international jet set. Megeve is also an ideal family ski vacation destination, as well as a cultural and social hub with a deliciously French feel. The lovely car-free village is centred around a major medieval-style plaza with a broad mix of buildings.

Megève is a dream for window shoppers and those who want to experience a luxury ski resort without having to hit the slopes. It has trendy stores, wonderful Michelin-star restaurants, and sophisticated pubs where you can have a post-ski cocktail or two. Those staying in a catered chalet in Megève, on the other hand, will be well provided for in terms of cuisine.

Megève is one of France’s most gorgeous ski resorts, with views of Mont Blanc from several of its courses. During a luxury ski break in Megève, there is plenty of skiing for all ages and levels, divided into three sectors: Rochebrune, Mont d’Arbois, and Le Jaillet.

    Skiing in Megève

Megève’s magnificent ski resort is divided into three major sections, two of which are connected by cable car. If you book a catered chalet in Megève, you will most likely be provided with a driver, making it easy to go to the slopes. The Chamois gondola takes you directly from the town core to Rochebrune, the most accessible (and picturesque) region.

A cross-valley cable car connects to the second sector, Mont d’Arbois, which culminates at Mont Joly (2353m). This is the largest sector with elevators and goes in numerous directions. It is also accessible via La Princesse, St Gervais, and St Nicolas, as well as via a free bus from town. The third section, Le Jaillet, is across the valley. Separate from the other two areas, Le Jaillet is linked to the slopes of La Giettaz and Combloux, and it offers some of the greatest off-piste skiing in the resort.

Megeve is classified as a ‘low’ resort since there is limited skiing over 2,000 m. However, the slopes are grazing land and require less snow covering than the rockier slopes of higher resorts. There are also large snowmaking facilities in case the major dumps do not materialise.

With a plethora of ski schools and great beginning slopes above the village, Megeve is an ideal location for learning to ski. With a large connected slopes, Megeve is an excellent resort for developing ski skills, but there is also plenty of red (and easy black) slopes available.

Chamois on the Mont Joly and the women’s downhill course at Cote 2000 provide the most demanding skiing, with lots of off-piste terrain to explore. Freestyle skiers may rehearse their techniques in many terrain parks, including Mont Joux, Rochebrune, and the top of the Jaillet gondola.
