Greece is a country with a rich history and cultural legacy, and its traditional Greek ancient villages, whether on mainland locations or urban, bustling islands, reflect this.
These communities, nestled in the mountains or along meandering shoreline pathways, give a look into the past and are well worth visiting to discover the authentic Greek character. In this post, we will take you on a tour of some of Greece’s most treasured, traditional towns, so you may add them to your bucket list for your next vacation in Greece.
Our favorite Greek ancient villages
Lefkes
Starting with Lefkes in Paros, this lovely spot is commonly referred to as the island’s “hidden gem.” It is located high in the hills and offers spectacular views of the island as well as a classic atmosphere that is difficult to surpass. The meandering alleys of the town are lined with white-washed cottages and stone-paved walks, while the surrounding hillsides are green and studded with little chapels and windmills. Visitors may stroll about town, stopping in local stores and cafés, or simply relax with a drink in one of the numerous squares adorned with brilliant bougainvilleas.
Villa Olivia II is a contemporary villa. It is situated on Paros’ lovely southern coast, an area famed for its calm beaches and traditional seafood tavernas that exemplify the unique island moods.
The architectural magnificence of the home blends well with the natural environment. The spacious terraces, which are built with raw local stone and flanked by olive trees, provide a beautiful ambiance of quiet and light.
A pale canvas is embellished within with furnishings and decorations made of wood or marble. The light blue and purple couches, along with the raw wooden table and some industrial design accents, create an aesthetically pleasing mix.
Ano Mera
Ano Mera in Mykonos is another must-see hamlet in Greece. This historic town in the heart of the island provides a tranquil respite from Mykonos’ hectic nightlife. Visitors may stroll through the village’s lovely streets and appreciate the 16th-century Venetian architecture. The Monastery of Panagia Tourliani, which has a magnificent 18th-century church with spectacular murals and golden icons, is a must-see in Ano Mera.
This Villa Eden, erupting from the jagged cliffs of Tourlos as a lookout overlooking the bay of the new port, Mykonos Town, and the cobalt Aegean Sea, is an extraordinary residence for 14 guests, making it one of the most spectacular homes even for Mykonos, the capital of luxury hospitality.
Its all-natural concept runs from the most fundamental features of its construction, such as its decorations and continuous sea views from all internal areas, to the core of its design, which includes the design of its outdoor plot and living spaces. The villa’s designers physically sculpted its outside parts out of natural stone, and the pool is a one-of-a-kind example of avant-garde construction that resembles a small sea-like cove inside natural rocks.
Old Peritheia
Corfu’s Old Peritheia is another fairytale-like village that is well worth a visit. This charming village in the northwestern portion of the island is one of the island’s oldest communities, with some structures going back to the 14th century. The village has tiny streets and alleyways, and the buildings are made of native stone and wood, giving it a distinct personality. Visitors may stroll around the village, admiring the wonderful architecture, learning about the island’s history and culture, and stopping at one of the local tavernas for some traditional Greek food.
Villa Donatella’s Estate is incredibly breathtaking, and it offers one of the most opulent villa experiences in Corfu. It offers a fantastic beachside location on Corfu’s eastern shore, overlooking a picturesque harbour. Its magnificent features include a private beach, premium facilities, an infinity pool, and a large green garden.
The estate consists of two beautiful private residences. Both villas can accommodate 14 people in 7 bedrooms and feature a variety of facilities that provide the impression of a five-star resort. Perfect for a fantastic Greek vacation! The family estate is situated on a hill overlooking the Ionian Sea.
Peloponnese
When visiting Peloponnese and the famous Porto Heli, make sure to stop at Ermioni, a charming fishing village that is often neglected by visitors despite being ideal for those seeking a calm escape. Visitors may stroll along the seafront and see the spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf, or they can explore the town’s small alleyways and admire the historic architecture. The local market, where tourists may purchase fresh seafood or enjoy fish and seafood specialities in the little restaurants right on the water, is one of Ermioni’s attractions.
Chora
Finally, there’s Chora in Antiparos, a real town known as a “hidden paradise.” This quaint village provides a calm respite, with attractive small lanes, whitewashed cottages, and vivid gardens and balconies. This small village is one of the prettiest Greek ancient villages with castle and fortress, as well as the location of several summer festivals where you may learn about the local culture and dance and drink the night away to the sounds of modern and traditional music.
